Safety First!
The first and most important goal of the Grafton County Fish & Game Association is to provide a safe environment where members and event participants can enjoy the shooting sports. That requires everyone to use good judgement and to follow the club’s rules and regulations! (<- click here)
Colonel Cooper’s Rules
- All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
- Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
- Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
- Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.
Dave Tilden Skeet Award
The 7th Annual Dave Tilden New Year’s Skeet Challenge has a winner! Michael Ward won using his 20 gauge over under.

The competition had a new format this year. Previously the winner was the first to shoot 25 straight. However, with improvement in our shooting skills, the “challenge” was over all too quickly. (A few years ago 3 people shot 25 straight in the first round!)
This year Dave Tilden, the originator of the competition, thought of a new format that might increase interest and participation: Anybody who shot 25 straight in either skeet or wobble skeet in January would be entered in the finals to be held in February. Any gun, any gauge. The 25 straight could be shot at club sponsored Sunday skeet or at a retired guys event, or even at self serve skeet (if someone witnessed it; “trust but verify”!).
Michael Ward was the 1st to shoot 25 in early January. Interestingly, it was just his 3rd straight! It looked as though he would be the only one to qualify until later in the month, Bill Westgate, Rick DiDomenico (a previous two time winner, shooting a .410 with which he had shot 325 straight this summer) and Pete Stanley came through with 25’s. Other shooters including prior winner Fred Davis were very close with multiple 24’s.
The finals were held in February on a Monday. The format was doubles and reverse doubles wobble skeet (!) from stations 3, 4 and 5. Michael won with an 8 out of 12. He took home the prizes offered by Dave Tilden who, as the 2024 winner, was not eligible this year. As tradition dictates, Dave was responsible for providing this year’s winner a suitable prize. Next year, Micheal will be ineligible to win and will be charged with supplying a gift.Congratulations to all competitors and finalists. And thanks to Dave Tilden, founder of the competition bearing his name. His vision for the new format was very successful in increasing interest and participation.
